The Moonlandingz, METZ, The Flaming Lips, Couch Slut, The Lumes, Charlie & The Lesbians, Iguana Death Cult, The Homesick
Compared to the last couple of years, there was not too much new music that caught my ear in 2017. Partly because I was not following up on all the latest releases like I used to do; partly because i was focussing on making music myself. However, the albums that did grab my attention are great. See a list below.
Note: while writing this I am listening to the new Electric Wizard record which just came out. It's a bit early for an opinion, but it sounds pretty sweet :)
The Moonlandingz - Interplanetary Class Classics
Man, I can't stop playing this record. Interplanetary Class Classics is just such an enjoyable listen. The Moonlandingz is a project from members of Fat White Family and The Eccentronic Research Counsel (yes, we talked about them). Their style is a combination of synth pop and punky, space rock. The songs are great. The lyrics are funny. The drumming is really, really tight. This record just makes me happy every time I put it on.
Recently they also released a single with a very cool, country B-side which is also worth a listen.
METZ - Strange Peace
As far as noise rock goes, METZ's first record is as good as it gets (yes, there is also Lightning Bolt). Their debut record from 2012 is one of my favorite albums of all time. However, their second record 'II' didn't really stick with me. It felt less energetic. But then this album was released and man it is great. The song Drained Lake might be my new favorite song of the band.
The Flaming Lips - Oczy Mlody
I never quite got into this band until they released The Terror in 2013. I really enjoy the bass-heavy, synth-heavy, dark and haunting energy of that record. With Oczy Mlody, they kind of took the same approach but made it much more song-based and catchy. The end result is another great record. Be sure to play this one as LOUD as you can :)
Couch Slut - Contempt
I don't know too much about this NYC-based noise / grindcore band. I have never seen them live but I hope I will soon. I really like this record they made. Its such a brutal set of tracks.
Dutch releases
I don't think I have to tell you that we have some good bands playing here in The Netherlands. These are the Dutch releases which ended up in my record collection this year. If you havn't already, be sure to check 'm out.
The Homesick - Youth Hunt
Iguana Death Cult - The First Stirrings Of Hidious Insect Life
Charlie & The Lesbians - The Lost Boy EP
The Lumes - Envy
